Word from the Pastor

A lot of people have the wrong idea about churches and Christianity.  Christianity is not about rules and regulations; it's about living, loving relationships.  It's about a relationship with God who loves you very much and people who care about you, too.  None of us are so bad that God can't forgive us and none of us are so good that we don't need God's forgiveness and love.  And frankly, we need other people to help us on this journey of faith in a world of fear.

At Gribble Springs Baptist Church we are not worried about being labeled "traditional'' or "contemporary,"  "liberal" or "conservative." We simply want to be authentic.  We are real people living in the present moment getting to know each other and getting to know the real God.

We are a small country church who always has open arms, open hearts, open minds, and open eyes seeing each other as one of God's precious creations.  We do not aspire to be something other than we are.  We still sing from the hymnals, read from the Bible, and walk together hand in hand, arm in arm, serving our living and loving Lord.

If you are at a point in your life where you are looking for such a place and such a people, I hope you will be our guest at Gribble Springs Baptist Church . You will feel right at home with us!  You won't be singled out or put on the spot in any way. The atmosphere is inviting, the people are friendly, and our journey of faith is relevant.

Our History

1st Building 1904-1952

Gribble Springs Baptist Church, organized in 1871, is one of the oldest churches in the county. Surrounded by prairie, near the northern bank of Clear Creek, the church sits on the top of a hill.

The name originated from a family named Gribble who settled in the area in the 1800s. Fresh water springs were discovered and soon the family name and the awareness of springs were combined to form the name of the community.

Although records no longer exist of the early years beyond the original formation, something happened sometime between 1871 and 1896 that caused the church to discontinue services and meetings. Only July 8, 1896, Gribble Springs Baptist Church was reorganized and emerged to what has been a continuous ministry from that day to the present.

Gribble Springs Baptist Church survived a tornado that swept through the community in 1904. The church building, the cotton gin, and the post office were destroyed by the storm. Gribble Springs rebuilt on the same site and has weathered a century of change in the community!

A Texas Historical Marker has been installed at the church site.

What is a Baptist?

B Believer's Baptism - Because we believe that becoming a Christian is a conscious decision, we baptize only those who have made that decision.

A Authority of Scripture - All authority in matters of faith and practice comes directly from the Bible. Baptists have no creeds. We have only confessions of faith.

P Priesthood of All Believers - One stands directly before God with no intermediary save Jesus Christ, the great high priest. It also means that we priest (minister to) one another.

T Total Religious Freedom -No agency or government may dictate to anyone what must be believed or practiced in one's religion.

I Independence of Local Churches - The center of life for Baptists is the local congregation. Conventions and Associations exist at the pleasure of the churches, not to control the churches.

S Symbolic Ordinances - Baptism and the Lord's Supper are outward and visible signs of inward and invisible grace. Symbols are nonetheless powerful and never to be thought of as mere symbols.

T Total Lordship of Jesus Christ - The profession of the earliest Christians was "Jesus is Lord!" Jesus is the clearest picture of God. We look to Jesus to know God.
